She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wes Carey (1985), her second husband, Andy Vladimir (2008), and her brother Reiner Lehman (2008). Ute is survived by her children, Michele (Rab Cummings) Carey of Bozeman, MT and Sonia (Mike) Monahan of Lafayette, CO; Andy#8217;s children Tom (Julie) Vladimir of Boca Raton, FL, Andrea (Peter Romanoff) Vladimir of NY, Jennifer (Chris) Shashaty of NY, and Alex Vladimir; Wes Carey#8217;s children Barbara Hunt and Bob Carey; her sister Anne Marie (Ami) Edinger of Berlin, Germany; as well as many adoring grandchildren and wonderful friends. Ute graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in History, and then received her Masters in Hospitality from Florida International University. However, Ute#8217;s true passion was sailing. She grew up sailing on the rivers of Berlin and she sailed widely in South Florida and the Caribbean with family and friends. Ute taught students of all ages to sail as an instructor for Womanship, Shake-a-Leg, the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and other sailings schools and organizations. Her boat Gone with the Wind was aptly named. Ute#8217;s passions were not entirely reserved for the oceans. When she was not sailing she helped to preserve and protect the natural habitats of Florida and the Caribbean through her work with the Tropical Audubon Society, South Florida Native Plant Society, Miami Blue Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association and others. The living expression of her love for the tropics was her native plant garden. She nurtured it with love and care and it, in turn, nurtured her. In lieu of flowers please consider planting a native tree, shrub or flower in an appropriate place near you. Learn how at www.fnps.org. You may also consider making a donation to Friends of the Environment, Abaco, Bahamas www.friendsoftheenvironment.org or the Haitian Education Leadership Foundation www.haitianeducation.org.
