Tim Whitman, 62, passed peacefully at his home in West Yellowstone, Montana, on February 23, 2025. Clyde and Susie Whitman welcomed Tim into their family on December 8, 1963, in St. Anthony, Idaho. Tim grew up with the forest as his backyard and took full advantage of it. He loved the outdoors his entire life. Tim spent most of his childhood either terrorizing the birds and squirrels in his backyard, or riding his peddle bike on Susie’s family ranch in Jeffers, MT, sometimes even riding his bicycle into O’Dell Creek.
Tim was very mechanically inclined, having acquired that passion while helping his father, Clyde, and his grandfather, John Whitman, at their family service station, Whitman’s Conoco. Tim attended West Yellowstone Schools from first grade through high school graduation, lettering in both football and basketball while in high school. After high school, Tim moved to Billings, MT, and attended Eastern Montana College. Following his time in Billings, Tim began to chase one of his passions, photography, managing photo labs in Helena, West Yellowstone, and Old Faithful. Tim Enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his RZR with friends, buying and selling firearms (a hobby he shared with his brother Bob), telling jokes, and working and spending time with all of his many friends. When Tim started working with his parents at Miller Ice Company, he would work his park route everyday of the summer season without a break. For the past 30 winters, Tim could be found any day of the week at Backcountry Adventures, working every day without taking a day off.
Tim was well known for his joke telling and pulling pranks on friends. When he would learn a new joke you could hear him calling friends sharing the new joke. Then he would end the call with “That’s all I’ve got”. Tim was very dedicated to the West Yellowstone Search and Rescue and the West Yellowstone Volunteer Fire Department for most of his adult life, a value he learned by watching Clyde and John and their commitment.
Tim was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Susie, his aunt, Millie Counts Whitman, and his grandparents. Tim is survived by his brother, Bob Whitman; his nephews, Austin and Hunter Whitman; his aunt, Connie Flynn Whitman; and numerous cousins and many friends. Timmy will be dearly missed and always remembered.
Tim’s Celebration of Life will be held May 31st, 2025. at the Parade Rest Ranch. Times will be posted on Facebook. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Tim’s honor to the West Yellowstone Search and Rescue (WYSAR), PO Box 548, West Yellowstone, MT 59758.
