Lynn Murrel Martin, 92, of Bozeman passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Highgate Senior Living. Lynn was born February 20, 1919 in Corvallis, Montana to Frank and Della Whittaker Martin. Lynn moved to Bozeman at a very young age where he lived the rest of his life. Lynn graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1938 and then attended Kemper Military School in Missouri on an athletic scholarship for one year. Upon returning to Bozeman Lynn attended Montana State College. Lynn received his commission as Lieutenant in the US Army and served 4 years on active duty; being especially proud of serving with the 10th Mountain Division. Lynn continued his military career for 17 years in the Army Reserves. While stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, he met and married Janet Phillips on Oct 3, 1945. They returned to Bozeman and together raised three girls. Lynn had a successful career with Montana Power Company. He started as journeyman lineman and when he retired in 1984, he was the Marketing Manager for the Bozeman-Livingston Division. Lynn was very active in the Bozeman community. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, served on the Bozeman Chamber of Commerce, was president of MSU Booster Club and Riverside Country Club. He also served 5 years as director on Montana Milk Control Board and was active in the Sigma Chi Alumni Association. Lynn was extremely involved in sports. He was the first athlete at Gallatin High School to receive 12 varsity letters; only 3 others have followed in his footsteps. Lynn was the ultimate Bobcat fan rarely missing a game rain or shine. If he wasn't found on the Gallatin River fly fishing or retrieving his putter, he would be on the golf course where he made three holes in one during his lifetime, as he tells the story! Lynn was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet and his parents, Della and Frank. Survivors include his children Ann Barnett of Winnemucca, NV, Karen Kinsey of San Antonio, TX, and Denise (Mike) Treat of Bozeman; grandchildren, Karmen Hickey, Catherine Halverson, and Deborah Floyd; six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, and his sister, Ida Crowell of Bozeman. Dad, we love you and will miss you. You are 'one of a kind'! Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday March 3rd, at St. James Episcopal Church, 5 West Olive Street, Bozeman. A memorial reception will be held at Riverside Country Club following the service. Donations in Lynn's name can be made to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital-Cardio Rehab Center, 915 Highland Blvd, Bozeman, MT 59715.
