Jon David Olson, 34, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning, August 19 in Bozeman, Montana. Jon was born on August 22, 1977 in Elgin, Illinois. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Portland, Oregon and graduated from Wilson High School in 1996. Jon’s love of the outdoors, mountain biking and all wildlife, including his own dogs, was richly satisfied when he moved to Bozeman, Montana. Jon graduated from Montana State University in 2003 and stayed in Bozeman after graduation to work at UPS and live a full life with a wide circle of friends and his constant and faithful companion, his dog Luna. Within the last two months, Jon earned his own UPS route through Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding area. He said he had the job of his dreams. It was one that gave him a daily view of Old Faithful, the ability to fish during his lunch break and to bike through the beautiful terrain of Yellowstone. Jon is survived by: his mother and step-father, Carolyn and Bob Gelpke; his father, Gary Olson; his brother, Erik and wife, Abigail, all of Portland, Oregon; as well as by his loving step-sister Jennifer (Clay) Stem; step-brother Rob (Michelle) Gelpke; and aunts, uncles, and cousins. Jon was preceded in death by all of his grandparents. A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Portland, Oregon at a later date. Memorials and gifts may be made to the Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 11390, Bozeman, MT 59719. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.dahlcares.com
