Herbert Cecil Ferguson

December 23, 1949 — February 19, 2025

Three Forks

On December 23, 1949, in Lewistown, Montana, a bouncing baby boy was born to Herb and Alice (Abott) Ferguson. He was named Herb after his proud dad. Shortly, thereafter, the Fergusons moved to Trident, Montana, just outside of Three Forks, Montana. Herb senior had accepted a transfer from the cement plant in Lewistown, to the cement plant in the tiny town of Trident.

Shortly thereafter, a baby sister, Joyce, joined the family. Trident was a great place to raise kids. They had the river flowing on one side, and the hills, bluffs, and gullies on the other side. His appreciation of the great outdoors began with the adventures and shenanigans while living in this area. His stories were entertaining.

They attended school in Trident through Junior High, then transferred into Three Forks. That is where Herb was introduced to sports, a whole new batch of interests were opened up to him.

He graduated from Three Forks High School in 1968 then went on to Montana State University. However, the opportunity to go to work back in Trident, presented itself, and for the next 36 years he worked for the cement company. During these years he had two sons, Christopher John (CJ), in Three Forks, and Brian, in Billings, MT.

Herb retired in 2009, and with his partner in life, Linda Koelzer, moved to Canyon Ferry, Montana to rebuild the lake home of his parents, and to enjoy a few years of lake life!

They returned to Three Forks in 2019, and continued to enjoy the great outdoors in so many ways! They racked up 4,900 miles on their bicycles, spent as much time as possible exploring new places in their camper and on their 4 wheeler, and they seemed to find adventure around every corner. During the winter months you could find Herb in his hideaway tooling his amazing leather creations.

On February 19, 2025, Herb passed away suddenly, outside in the sunshine, tinkering with a friend’s 4 wheeler that was not wanting to start.

Herb is survived by his sons CJ, Brian and his wife Jordan, their almost two year old daughter Amerlie Jane, and stepson Trayton, Linda, her daughter Lee Anne and Jade, son Brian, daughter in law Kara, and grandsons Bowen and Schafter. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
