Hazel Martin

August 3, 1918 — July 8, 2008

Tuesday, July 08, 2008, Mom went home to be with the Lord.Hazel Catherine Hoven Martin (Jackie) was born on August 3rd, 1918 to Faye E. and Peter J. Hoven in Lewistown, Montana. Hazel and her two sisters, Peg and Mary Jean, were raised on their family ranch near Hobson, Montana. Hazel#8217;s pride in her hometown, the countryside, and many dear, lifelong friends remained close to her heart. Education was a valued priority as she graduated from Hobson High School and Montana State University respectively. As a 1940 graduate from college receiving her Bachelor of Science in Education, Hazel taught for four years before starting her family. She was an advocate for secondary and trade-school education her entire life. Marriage to John R. Martin in November, 1946 provided many opportunities for her to fulfill her desire to raise a family in a loving home. Regardless of where she lived, Hazel was an active member in the Catholic Church and extended the hand of the Lord through her care of others#8217; needs both spiritually and physically.Exemplifying a belief in community spirit, she volunteered her time and efforts as an active member of service-oriented groups, some of them include: Alpha Gamma Sorority, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Parent Teacher Association, Young at Heart, Bozeman Deaconess Pink Ladies, and the Gallatin County Rest Home Volunteers. Being the mother of eight children, she inspired and passed on her love of learning, gardening, reading, work ethic, playing games, dancing, a patriotic spirit, and love of God. Hazel shared her honesty through faithful words and by her living example. As one blessed with the gift of sharing her life on the ranch, pre and post-depression, plus wartime memories, she had a knack for transporting her many listeners.Hazel and John raised eight children: Peter (Susan) Martin, Forsyth, MT; Wanda (Dave) Brown, St. Croix Falls, WI; Dan (Barb) Martin, Newport, OR; Becky (Jim) Dobrowski, Bend, OR; Teresa (Gary) Kimmet, Columbia Falls, MT; Joe (Dori) Martin, Spanaway, WA; Mary (Joe) Fehrer, Bozeman; and Bernie Martin, Helena, MT.Hazel#8217;s love for children and family was evident as she treasured each of her eight children, sons and daughters-in-law, twenty-two grand-children, twenty-one great-grand-children, plus numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, two living sisters-in-law, and friends. Loved ones preceding her in death are her parents and grandparents, husband; John Martin, Peg and Rudy Matzinger, Mary Jean and Bill Aubert also many extended family members and friends who#8217;ve gone to be with the Lord before her. She missed them all.Memorials in her name may be sent to the Hobson Scholarship Fund, c/o Hobson Public School, Hobson, MT 59452 or to a charity of one#8217;s choice.A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 am, Monday, August 11, 2008 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
