Gregory Clark Underhill

February 3, 1951 — May 9, 2018

Gregory “Greg” Clarke Underhill, 67, of Bozeman, MT

We lost our wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and best friend on May 9, 2018. Greg was born February 3, 1951 in Littleton, NH, to Clinton C. and Hester (Chisholm) Underhill.

Greg grew up on Wachusett Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary, where his mother was a naturalist with the Audubon Society. His elementary school years were spent in Princeton, MA. Greg’s family then moved to Franconia, NH, where he graduated from Littleton New Hampshire High School in 1969.

Greg’s love of the mountains was developed and nurtured at an early age through his parents in rural New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The outdoors were a consistent anchor in his life.

Greg’s father started him skiing at the age of three. He was on ski patrol at the Mittersill Alpine Ski Area in Franconia, NH and Monarch Ski Area, Salida, CO. He also spent summers bartending in Yellowstone National Park.

Greg’s career path turned from ski bum to engineer on a blue bird day with two feet of fresh powder, and he realized life was asking him for more.

After his career path changed he attended the following educational institutions: WSCU in Gunnison, CO, Flathead Community College in Kalispell, MT and Montana State University Bozeman (Go Cats GO!) where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on geotechnical engineering. Greg was a senior geotechnical engineer/manager responsible for geotechnical investigations and designs for site development, structures, dams, mine reclamation, and solid waste projects for over 32 years for HKM Engineering in Sheridan, WY, Billings, MT and Bozeman, MT.

Greg met the love of his life Cherry Garber, in 1985 in Bozeman, MT. They were married on their college graduation day June 14, 1986 in Bozeman, MT.

Greg loved all that Montana had to offer and sharing the outdoors with his family and friends. His grand adventures included skiing, white water rafting, fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, tennis, and ping pong.

Greg loved our community and served the community through the Bozeman Lions Club for over 10 years and he was a proud member of the NRA.

Greg’s family meant everything to him. He will be remembered for his devotion to his family and friends, his great smile and laugh. Greg was relaxed, opinionated, patient, forgiving, positive and kind. Greg was the most encouraging person and the first one to offer you a beer. He was always prepared for any possible situation. Always wise and analytical, he understood how everything worked. Our memories of him will include listening to him sing, play his harmonica and guitar. His grandchildren loved fishing with him in the pond that he built for them. He was so proud of each and every one of his grandchildren. In the eyes of his family “Our most grateful memory of Greg will be his unconditional love”.

Greg held himself to a higher standard in all aspects of his life, family, work and recreation.

He was preceded in death by parents, aunts and uncle.

Survivors include his wife Cherry of 32 years; sons Buck (Jenn) McKay and James (Chelsey) Underhill; his 6 grandchildren that meant the world to him - Hazen, Luke, Tucker, Evie, Corbyn, and Rowan all of Bozeman, MT; a brother Thomas (Marsha) Underhill of Nashua, NH; 5 cousins, 5 nieces and nephews and numerous extended members, close friends, floating and hunting buddies and his beloved Rascals, you know who you are.

A celebration of Greg’s life will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Rockin T. J. Ranch, 651 Lynx Lane, Bozeman, MT.

Memorials may be made in his name to Sourdough Lions c/o Wayne Gibson, 1201 Highland Blvd, D-109, Bozeman, MT 59715, Gallatin Valley Search and Rescue, 615 S. 16th Ave, Bozeman, MT 59715, Sacajawea Audubon Society, P.O. Box 1711, Bozeman, MT 59771-1711, or better yet take a kid skiing!
