Elizabeth 'Betty' Anne Brownfield

Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Brownfield passed away on November 14, 2012 at the Mountain View Rest Home in Bozeman, MT at the age of 95. Betty was born on July 19, 1917 in Glasgow, MT to Tom and Anna Leedham, the second of five children. With the building of the Fort Peck Dam near Glasgow, her family prospered and she was able to graduate from Montana State College (now Montana State University) in 1939. While teaching school in Broadus, MT she met Ben Brownfield who ranched in Carter County on Box Elder Creek. They married in 1941 and had three children: Don, Jean, and Barbara. In 1960 the family sold their property in Carter County and moved to a ranch south of Glendive. Ben passed away in 1971 and Betty continued to live in Glendive until moving to Bozeman in 2000. Betty was active in the Republican Party and spent many winters in Helena while her husband served in the Montana Senate. She enjoyed traveling and had a wonderful “circle of friends” in Glendive. The Montana Cowbelles were well served by Betty as their president in 1977. Betty was a member of the Congregational Church of Glendive and the PEO. For many years she volunteered with the Glendive Hospital Auxiliary. Betty found her greatest joy in being with family. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings. Betty is survived by three children, Don Brownfield (Woodstock, GA), Jean Ballantyne (Gainesville, FL) and Barbara Campbell (Bozeman, MT), 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Congregational Church of Glendive or the charity of choice.
