Elizabeth (Beth) Scheibe Atteberry Wood

December 6, 1917 — February 17, 2018

Elizabeth (Beth) Scheibe Atteberry Wood

Heaven got a good one this week, but she sure made 'em wait. Elizabeth Eddrie Scheibe Atteberry Wood slipped gently from her earthly bonds on Saturday, February 17, 2018 and is now dancing in the arms of her love once again. Beth was 73 days into her 101st trip around the sun, and passed peacefully and quickly from natural causes while in her own bed in Bozeman, Montana.

The winter of 1917, Raymond Scheibe drove his very pregnant wife Agnes in the wagon from their rural homestead on Montgomery Ridge into the "town" of Anatone, Washington, where their eldest child Beth was born on December 6. After graduating from high school in Anatone, Beth attended two years of Normal School in Lewiston, ID where she met Linsy Atteberry. They married in 1937 and had three children. After divorce in 1948, Beth rekindled a friendship from high school with Walter Wood and they married in 1952 - the start of a loving 50 year marriage until he passed in 2002. Beth and Walter ranched in Lapwai, Idaho until they retired in 1974 to Clarkston, Washington. Beth moved to Bozeman, Montana in 2005 to be closer to her oldest son Ray and his wife Katherine.

Beth's lifelong passion for music started at age 5 by learning to play the piano on a bench painted to look like a keyboard. She became an accomplished pianist and organist, playing in dancehalls and churches and often singing in the choir. Beth was active in her community in the Boy Scouts with her children, the Cow Belles professional organization of cattlewomen, and she and Walt went dancing most Saturday nights at local fraternal lodges. She was a gifted seamstress and quilter and her fried chicken was top notch. Her competitive spirit showed playing cards, dice and bingo and she loved to play until she won. Beth had a sharp wit, a sense of humor that was with her until the end, and loved to tease with a sparkle in her eye; watch out when she raised one eyebrow and said "Bless your heart." Beth made lifelong friends in every stage of her life, and was well loved by many.

Beth is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Scheibe and Agnes Peterson Scheibe; her husband Walter Wood; her siblings Charlotte Scheibe Mosher and George Scheibe; her son William Charles Atteberry; her grandson Johnny Dwight Atteberry; her favorite schnauzer Tammy and grand dog Tucker. She is survived by her son Ray Atteberry (Katherine), Bozeman, MT; LynneAdene Thompson (Doug), Walters, OK; grandchildren Cathy Rehms Wood Kaku (Sho), Ginger Atteberry, Alec Rehms (Candace), Cassie Atteberry (Marcelo Rosa), and Kris Atteberry (Jenny Posthumus); great grandchildren Robyn Lehrman, Hannah Lehrman, Jessica Atteberry, Vivienne and Angelina Kaku; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. At Beth's request, there will be no memorial services. She will be interred in Mountain View Mausoleum in Lewiston, ID with her husband. Memorials can be made in Beth's name to Asotin County Historical Museum (215 Filmore St., Asotin, WA 99402) or Compassus Hospice (301 Edelweiss Dr, Suite 6, Bozeman, MT 59718).

We will miss our beautiful, funny, caring mother / grandmother / friend and the unconditional love she gave us. Her spirit will live on in our hearts forever. Many thanks to the people at Birchwood Assisted Living and Compassus hospice for the loving care and dignity you gave her.
