Edward William Neuman

July 8, 1945 — August 1, 2016

Edward William Neuman, 71, died on Aug. 1, 2016, after a brief illness.

Edward was born the second child of Dr. and Mrs. (Lee Riley) E. W. Neuman in Helena, Montana, on July 8, 1945. He attended Bishop Gilmore Grade School, Cathedral High School, and graduated from Carroll College in Helena, Montana. Following a special calling, Ed entered the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity and was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest in the Diocese of Helena in 1971. He served faithfully at the Immaculate Conception Church in Butte, Montana, and the Christ the King Church University of Montana Newman Center in Missoula, Montana. Although Ed left his station as a Catholic Priest to follow a new path of husband and father, his desire to help others continued to be an important element of his character. This passion led him to become a social worker, human resources director and spiritual healer. Most recently Ed was a Chaplain at Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital. Ed was a committed and passionate member of Resurrection Catholic Parish where he shared his deep faith and ecumenicalism with all.

Ed was a peacemaker, artist, enthusiastic conversationalist and orator, historian, chocolate lover, and proud father. He had many talents, chief among them, the ability to comfort and counsel both young adults and older members of the community. He believed in the inherent value of every being and helped many with encouragement and genuine concern for all. In times of crisis, he was able to elevate loss to a new level, allowing those dying or grieving to embrace a new beginning. He did not just have a heart for helping humans; he loved dogs and could often be seen walking Laddie on the Bozeman trails. He was well known for his sharp and sometimes sarcastic wit and humor. Ed was well known within Bozeman’s medical and religious communities. He will be missed by many who loved him deeply.

Ed is survived by his son Matthew and daughter-in-law Bobbi. He is also survived by Deborah Neuman, brother Dennis, sister-in-law, Bernadette, brother-in-law Stephen Lane, sister-in-law Marilyn Neuman, and his nieces and nephews, Jonathan, Alicia Lee, Katie, Elizabeth, and Paul. Ed loved them as though each was his very own and they, valued and returned that love.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Helen Neuman Lane, brothers John and Michael, dear aunts, uncles, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ed Neuman Peace Fund at 1st Interstate Bank. Your gifts will be used to purchase a bench with a plaque in Ed’s honor on one of Bozeman’s beautiful trails for a place to rest, reflect and find peace.

A Funeral Mass will be at noon on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2016 at Resurrection University Parish with Father Val Zdilla presiding. A reception at the church will follow the Mass. Interment of the cremated remains will be 11:00 A.M. Friday morning at Resurrection Cemetery in Helena, MT.
