Edward Robert Heimburg LCDR (Ret)

July 8, 1933 — October 10, 2024

After a long life and a short illness Ed passed away peacefully at his home on October 10th, 2024.

Edward "Ed" was born in Brooklyn, NY to Edward and Anna Heimburg on July 8th, 1933. He spent his youth in Queens living in a townhouse with his parents, grandparents, Uncle Arthur, Aunt Charlotte, and his loving sister, Doris. He always recounted the fun he had playing baseball in the streets and imaging he was a member of his life-long favorite team the Dodgers. As a stable boy at Forest Park Ed developed his love of fast motion riding retired police horses.

Upon graduating high school Ed enlisted in the Navy. In 1956 Ed was extremely proud of earning his Naval Aviator wings. From 1964-1966 he was the Arresting and Catapult Officer on the US Hornet. He loved the thrill and the technological marvel of flying the F9F Panther and the A-3 Skywarrior planes as a pilot. His 20 plus years in the Navy took him to the Mediterranean, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Hawaii and the East and West Coast of the US.

While stationed in southern California, Ed met schoolteacher Mary Goodale. Ed and Mary bonded over their love of baseball, the beach, jazz, and reading books. They were married in June 1960 at Pearl Harbor Naval Station Hawaii. During their early years of marriage, they were stationed in Coronado, Seal Beach and Alameda, CA and Oak Harbor, WA. During this time, they were blessed with three daughters, Jan Marie, Kristin Ann and Jacqueline "Jill" Mary. Over the years the family maintained close relationships with Mary's extended family in Montana and their dear friends Claire and "Spook".

After retiring from the Navy, Ed received a business degree from Cal State Hayward. He worked for a number of years at Caterpillar and the IRS. In 1978 Ed, Mary and the girls moved to Bozeman. In semi-retirement Ed worked at the MSU physical plant while steadfastly attending to Mary during a terminal illness.

In 1998 Ed married Alice Rucks and enjoyed wonderful times traveling in the motorhome, playing golf, socializing with good friends in the Bridger Creek, MT and West Springs St. George, UT communities, and watching the Packers and 49ers games. Ed thoroughly enjoyed his time with Alice's family celebrating milestones, holidays, and weddings. The family moments spent with Alice's daughters Lynn, Lisa and Sue were very special to Ed.

As an avid golfer there was never a bad time to hit the links. Ed also enjoyed floating the beautiful Montana rivers with his daughter Kristin and son-in-law, Darren.

Ed is survived by his wife Alice of Fort Worth, TX, daughters Jan Marie Breigenzer (Tom), Kristin Heimburg, and Jill Heimburg , brother-in-law Ray Fuentes, members of Alice’s family and Mary's cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the Bozeman Cancer Center, the Springs, and Eden Health for their good care in Ed's last months. Thanks to the wonderful neighbors at Bridger Creek in Bozeman. In lieu of a service have a G&T while listening to a Frank Sinatra recording.
