Duane Julien, 62, of Anthem, AZ and Bozeman, MT died of a lengthy illness on Saturday morning, September 12, 2009, at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. Duane was born in Duluth, MN on March 6, 1947. In 1948, his family relocated to CA, where he developed his enthusiasm for the outdoors and a deep appreciation for nature. As a great dad to his children and a favorite teacher to hundreds of students, he exuded a lifelong playful spirit and a humorously irreverent outlook on life, always quick with a joke balanced by a joyful, giving, and loving heart. A 1965 graduate of Anderson Union High School, Anderson, CA, Duane subsequently received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in social studies and anthropology from California State University at Chico. In 1984, Duane relocated to Glasgow, MT, where he was able to pursue the myriad of outdoor activities he cherished. While teaching high school mathematics, science, and social studies in nearby Frazer on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, he also worked as a summer seasonal archaeologist for the United States Bureau of Land Management and as a contracted archaeologist for the Army Corps of Engineers. In 2001, Duane relocated to Anthem, AZ and taught at various private charter high schools in Phoenix. While in Bozeman, he assisted in the development of the Dinosaur Playground at Gallatin County Regional Park in Bozeman. Duane is survived by his wife of eight years, Mary Skordinsky; his parents, Donald and Joan (Thoreson) Julien, Las Vegas, NV; siblings Robert and Claudia Julien, Redding, CA; two daughters, April Julien Todd, Belgrade, MT, and Erin Julien Sharkey, Cincinnati, OH; two grandsons, Jack and Henry Sharkey; sons-in-law Bill Todd and Chris Sharkey; and his former wife of 30 years, Carol (Holmes) Julien, Bozeman, MT. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at the Unity Church of Bozeman, with the Reverend Philip A.
