Doug, age 71, passed away on February 18, 2023, after a short illness. Doug was born on January 4, 1952, on the Iron Range in Grand Rapids, MN. His parents were Arlie Kuhl and Annice (Loverude) Hartman. He is one of six children. They moved from the Iron Range to Rosemount, MN and then to Lomira, WI when he was in his teens. He and his brothers spent a lot of time on the farms of their grandparents in the summers which instilled his work ethic.
Doug was a 1970 graduate of Lomira High School. He was a two sport letterman in Cross Country and Wrestling. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the Navy. He served for four years with one year and three months of foreign service and received an honorable discharge. Doug moved to Montana in 1980 and lived there until his death. He and his first wife raised their three boys in the Gallatin Valley. At the time of his death, he was living in Belgrade, MT with his wife Lenee Synder. They were married 29 years.
Doug spent most of his adult life in construction earning the respect of his peers as a master carpenter. All of his employers were impressed by his work ethic. Doug also loved playing guitar and writing music. He was very good at both. We tried to get him to publish some of his music, but he always said, “the songs aren’t ready yet.”
Doug is survived by wife, Lenee; sons, Joseph (Jackie) Kuhl of Helena, MT, Daniel (Audrie) Kuhl of Las Vegas, NV, Aaron Kuhl (fiancée Ivy) Australia; stepdaughter, Michelle Jones of Belgrade, MT; and stepson, Gordon Snyder of Belgrade, MT. He is further survived by his mother, Annice Hartman of Oshkosh, WI; siblings, Laurene (Michael) Kietzer of Lomira, WI, Gregory (Beth) Kuhl of Belgrade, MT, Valerie (Jena) Kuhl of Oshkosh, WI, Suzanne (William) Roetzer of Oshkosh, WI, and Kurt Kuhl of Prescott, AZ; multiple nieces and nephews as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his infant daughter, Kelly Kuhl; father, Arlie Kuhl; stepmother, Irene Kuhl; stepfather, Richard Hartman; grandparents, Oscar and Albertina (Fenske) Kuhl and Elmer and Augusta (Meyer) Loverude.
My brother was one of the toughest men I have ever known. I will miss him. He will be missed by family and many good friends. RIP
