Dana Orlando Schrupp

Dana Orlando Schrupp passed away July 6, 2014 at his home in Bozeman surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 19, 1922 in Shepherd, MT to Frank and Edna (Worrall) Schrupp. Dana was raised on a farm west of Great Falls and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1940. He worked at the Anaconda refinery for two years and then enrolled at Montana State College in Bozeman before being called to active duty. He attended flight training in Texas and graduated from Lubbock Army Air Base as a 2nd Lt. in Multi-engine. Dana’s military career consisted of flying bombing missions in Europe in a B-17 while he was based in England. After WWII, he retained his military status and was active in the Air Force Reserve. He retired as a Lt. Col. in 1982. In 1946, Dana once again enrolled at Montana State College, this time graduating in 1948 with a degree in Agriculture and Animal Science. Dana married June Smith of Gilt Edge, MT on August 24, 1946. While at MSC, he was active in the college 4H Club, Ag Club, Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, and Mu Beta Beta (honorary 4H). Dana received a National 4H Scholarship from the Department of Agriculture. He then went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Adult Education from George Washington University in 1950. Dana received employment from the Montana Extension Service as the Agricultural County Extension Agent in Glasgow, MT. After 10 years, he was transferred to Bozeman where he had the same position until 1974. He was then promoted to State Program Coordinator for the Extension Service. He especially enjoyed working with 4H youth throughout his career. In 1969-70, Dana was appointed as an Agricultural Resource Manager for the Peace Corps training in Ecuador. He spent time in Ecuador recruiting native speakers for the training program. Dana volunteered as an escort at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital for 17 years and over 7,000 hours as a docent at the Museum of the Rockies. He also spent seven summers as an active blacksmith at the Tinsley Farm. He is survived by his wife June; three children: Colleen (Frank) Proffitt, David (Joanne Dunne) Schrupp, and Tom (Ann) Schrupp; 10 grandchildren ; 14 great-grandchildren and his brother, Willard Schrupp. Visitation will take place at 4:00 pm, followed by a Rosary Service at 5:00 pm and a Vigil Service at 5:30 pm at Dahl Funeral Chapel, Bozeman on Sunday, July 13, 2014. Funeral Mass will take place at 10:00 am on Monday, July 14, 2014 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Bozeman, followed by interment with military honors at Sunset Hills Cemetery.
