Cheryl Nadine Johannes

Cheryl Nadine Johannes, 66, of Bozeman passed away March 8, 2013 after a valiant battle with cancer. She was born September 2, 1946 in Alliance, Nebraska to William Wesley and Jackie Vee Novel (Duke) Strasburger. She attended a one room school in Nebraska until the 8th grade. Cheryl and her family moved to a ranch northeast of Pompey’s Pillar and finished high school in Worden, Montana. Cheryl married her high school sweetheart James. P. Johannes on September 10, 1966 at the Bethlehem Congregational Church. She was a life-long educator earning her undergraduate degree in Billings and earning two graduate degrees from MSU Bozeman. She spent her life educating students as a teacher, principal, superintendent and professor in Belgrade, Turner, Wibaux, Dillon and Bozeman. She culminated her 43-year career in education as a principal in Clark County School District, Las Vegas, Nevada before retiring in 2011. The Anderson School of Bozeman recently honored her service as their superintendent in dedicating the new school library in her name. Cheryl’s love of music and education was evident as she and her husband raised their two boys in eastern Montana. She was active in many community programs and sang often at church and in choirs wherever she went. As an educator she was best known for her love of learning, children and books. Her educational focus was always on what was best for the kids. She spent many years as a 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher, and mentor to the children around her. Her priorities in life were family, church, education, and making her community a better place. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband James of Bozeman, two sons and daughter-in-laws Tay (Tae) Johannes of Fairborn, Ohio, Danen (Jody) Johannes of Columbus, MT; 5 grandchildren Daniel, Jay, Cierra, Bailey and Trey; brothers Duane, Stephen (Natalie) and Shane Strasburger: and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. A Celebration of Cheryl’s life will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at Hope Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made in her name to any cancer charity in Bozeman, Hope Lutheran Church at 2152 W Graf Street of Bozeman and the Philippines Mission c/o Dayton Korean Baptist Church, 5051 Wilmington Pike, Centerville, Ohio 45440.
